Esme Patterson has a smile that stretches from ear to ear; she seems friendly and caring, and poppy songs like “No River,” where she admits her human flaws, or “Find It,” a motivating track that tells the listener to go find what you need, seem to confirm that.

But Patterson’s upcoming album is called We Were Wild, and that’s exactly what she and her band were tonight — wild. With a curly head of hair intimidatingly covering her eyes and wielding a signature ESP guitar, Patterson blew the roof off World Cafe Live at NonCOMM.

It seemed like the tiny PRX stage could hardly contain the volume that Patterson and her band created, especially when they closed out their set with a song from the new record called “Feel Right.” It had a heavier sound than the other four tracks, certainly living up to the title of “wild.”

With only five songs to get a taste for what Esme Patterson brings to the table, it was hard to really put a label on her sound. One second she sounded like a delightful folk pop singer, and the next she was a bad ass rocker that made you want to bang your head.

I guess to get a real handle on just how wild she is, you’ll have to catch her next time — at XPoNential Festival in July.
