NonCOMM Recap: Simo brings it home at the end of day three
With 29 bands playing in the span of three days, NonCOMM is more of a marathon than a sprint. In that sense, Simo, being the 29th band to perform, is like a runner on the final two-tenths of a mile at the end of a marathon (this metaphor is not mathematically to scale). And let me tell you, this metaphorical runner finished mighty strong.
JD Simo, the vocalist and guitarist of the Nashville based rock trio, was all in from the get go of the set. Midway through the first song, he was shining with perspiration. By the end of the second, sweat was flinging off the ends of curly hair. Before the the third was over, his face was as red as a cherry. This progression was the result of some wizardly guitar play and a vocal performance that seemed to draw from the extreme depths of his lungs.
The crowd couldn’t get enough of Simo. There was dancing, head banging, and spilling of drinks on my shoes. Things got wild, culminating with a cover of “With a Little Help From My Friends” a la Joe Cocker. The audience loved it so much that it sprouted an encore. The band grabbed some water, somehow summoned the energy for one more song, and crossed the finish line of that marathon.
