NonCOMM Recap: Nothing can stop the supersonic train that is Soul Asylum
At first mention, 90’s heroes Soul Asylum sound a little out of place at NonCOMM – what are these alternative rockers doing with a bunch of folk/Americana acts? As soon as the band started playing, however, they made their purpose here at the convention known with a wall of sound – and the crowd greeted them with roaring applause.

Soul Asylum released their 11th studio album, Change of Fortune, back in March. They’re a proven legacy act with a youthful stage presence and undeniable talent. The band’s set was mixed with classic hits and new favorites, especially the burning “Supersonic.” It wouldn’t be a Soul Asylum set without “Runaway Train” which brought both cheers and nostalgia from the audience.
As frontman Dave Pirner thanked the audience, it was evident that he truly loves what he does. He and the rest of his band of terrific musicians were all smiles, especially bassist Winston Roye, who took lead vocal duties for a couple bars. Guitarist Justin Sharbono and drummer Michael Bland, along with Roye and Pirner, showed that Soul Asylum is a force to be reckoned with, especially on stage.
