This Day in Music History: The Beatles record “Yellow Submarine,” Marianne Faithful records “As Tears Go By”

1963 – Elvis Presley records “Echoes Of Love,” “Please Don’t Drag That String Around,” “(You’re The) Devil In Disguise,” and “Never Ending.”

1964 – Marianne Faithful records the Mick Jagger & Keith Richards song ‘”As Tears Go By,” accompanied by future Led Zeppelin members Jimmy Page on guitar and John Paul Jones on bass.

1966 – The Rolling Stones have their sixth #1 on the UK singles chart with “Paint It, Black,” the first chart-topping song to feature a sitar on the recording.

1966 – The Beatles record “Yellow Submarine” at Abbey Road studios in London. EMI engineer Geoff Emerick works on the session in lieu of producer George Martin, who is will with food poisoning.

1969 – Still on honeymoon, John Lennon and Yoko Ono check in to room 1742 in Montreal’s Hotel La Reine, where they start their 2nd week-long Bed-In for Peace. During this week, they write “Give Peace A Chance” with Timothy Leary, Tommy Smothers, and Dick Gregory. The song is credited to Lennon & McCartney, even though Paul had nothing to do with it.

1972 – David Bowie offers two of his songs to Mott the Hoople, who are on the verge of breaking up. They pass on “Suffragette City” but “All The Young Dudes” becomes their biggest hit and revives their career.

1973 – The Edgar Winter Group goes to #1 on the US singles chart for the first and only time with “Frankenstein.” In live performances of the song, Edgar Winter pioneered the advancement of the synthesizer as a lead instrument by becoming the first person ever to strap a keyboard instrument around his neck.

1990 – For the first time ever, the top five positions on the US singles chart were all held by female artists: Madonna was at #1 with “Vogue,” Heart were at #2, Sinead O’Connor #3, Wilson Phillips #4, and Janet Jackson was at #5.

1994 – Michael Jackson marries Elvis’ daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, in a secret ceremony held in the Dominican Republic. The couple divorce 20 months later, citing irreconcilable differences.

2012 – Cult frontman Ian Astbury marries musician Aimee Nash in Las Vegas.
