Weezer brings 20 years worth of summertime jams to BB&T
Summer is officially here, which for avid concert-goers means it’s time for festivals, block parties, and mega-tours. This year, Weezer set the summer tone with Panic! at the Disco and Andrew McMahon, the lead singer of Jack’s Mannequin.
Headlining the sold out concert at the BB&T Pavilion, Weezer put on a show with full energy and visual creativity. Whether it was the bucket hats or the beach bungalow drummer, Patrick Wilson, played atop of, each song incorporated something to remind you what the season is all about. Everything from confetti and streamers filling the air to an old video of Venice Beach displayed behind the band screamed “summer in California.”
Fans familiar with their new release, The White Album, went ecstatic when they started the set with “California Kids,” the album’s opening track. During this song, frontman Rivers Cuomo spent most of his time kicking dozens of large beach balls throughout the venue. With so many hits thrusted in this 90-minute set, each song jumped back and forth from one decade to another. The older fans sang along as they played “My Name is Jonas” and “Undone(Sweater Song),” while those up to date on their newest release cheered heavily for songs like “Thank God For Girls.” Midway through the set, Weezer flexed their jam muscle with a fluid five-song medley starting with “Dope Nose” and ending with “Surf Wax America.”
As one could tell by the many uses of comedy in their music videos, Weezer is a very funny group. At one point the band took time to read some tweets about the show as it was happening. The most receptive tweet came from one that read, “If Weezer reads this at the show, I will propose to my girlfriend right now.” Although nobody is sure if this actually happened it gained a huge reaction nonetheless.
Once the massive infamous Weezer logo came down, fans knew they were approaching the climax of the show, as they finished with favorites “Say It Ain’t So” and came back for an encore performing “Buddy Holly” to a photo compilation of famous women in the media. Weezer is one of the few bands whose catalog of hits expands for ages, with their first album, The Blue Album, released in 1994. After being in the game for 20 years, it’s clear that nothing has changed for Weezer. Aside from the size of the venues, the band continues to give headstrong performances and a unique experience for fans old and new.
