That’s no moon, it’s SKYWALKEN III, the new beat tape from Ill Clinton
Philly beatmaker Ill Clinton returns with SKYWALKEN III, the third volume of his punny series of SKYWALKEN albums. It’s out this Saturday, Oct. 8th, just in time for Cassette Store Day, and will be available on CD, the aforementioned tape format, and via Bandcamp. In anticipation, he’s shared a video for the second track off the album, “DRT ERTH”, which sees him experimenting with analog and lo-fi textures like he never has before.
The video begins with the iconic shot of Luke Skywalken looking out at Tatooine’s twin moons before transitioning into a series of space-y, psychedelic visuals. Instead of providing some sort of narrative, it seems to act more as a mood board of, placing most of the focus on the music. Sonically, “DRT ERTH” has more of a warm and fuzzy feel than previous SKYWALKEN albums, with the drums tucked further back in the mix and a prominent vinyl crackle throughout. Whether you see this as a good or bad thing, it’s a sound that lends itself well to the cassette format. Ill Clinton has always done exactly what he’s wanted to, and that’s not going to change any time soon.
Stream the video for “DRT ERTH” below, then preorder SKYWALKEN III via Us Natives Records before it drops at the end of the week.
