Meet Sun Hat, Philadelphia indie rockers with mystique
Sun Hat is a Philly band that has newly appeared on our radar at The Key, and is set to release their debut LP Pet Shapes on November 5th.
The trio is teasing the new album with the release of “100k”; upon first impression, it feels like a hybrid of 90s grunge and psychedelic rock. The track is dominated by distorted guitars and lo-fi vocals with laid-back Mac Demarco-esque productions scattered in the background.
Because of the lo-fi recording, the lyrics of the track are difficult to make out. Without the lyrics posted on Bandcamp, I’m pretty clueless as to what the subject matter of the song is. Despite this, the track seems like it is meant to invoke a vibe through arrangements and nondescript vocals rather than deliberate imagery. This is a bold move for a debut track, but they manage to pull it off.
Sun Hat is certainly worth keeping an eye on, which you can do by going to the album release party for Pet Shapes at The Pharmacy on November 5th. More information on the show can be found here.
