LA’s Hit Bargain bring performance punk to Space 1026 next month
Los Angeles punk band Hit Bargain are one of those acts that are great on tape, but for the full experience you really need to see them live. You’ll have a chance to do just that next month when they bring their quick east coast tour to Space 1026 on November 10th, performing alongside Taiwan Housing Project, URSULA, and Brooklyn’s DJ Freddy Nightliker.
Comprised of former members of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, North Highlands, and These Are Powers, Hit Bargain is fairly new – they played their first show a little over a year ago and released their self-titled debut this past March. The EP is both contemplative and urgent, approaching its social critiques through accessible themes while drawing acute attention to issues like gender and police brutality. The “queencore” band has fun with it too, paying homage to their self-proclaimed spirit animal Bruce Willis in the Die Hard inspired opener “The Circuits That Cannot Be Cut.”
Joining them are local experimental artists Taiwan Housing Project and URSULA. The former also released some new recordings this year with Project Kiki. Somewhere between pure pop and droning noise sits the collection of repetitive, melodic layers that are always on the cusp of dropping into a traditionally structured song but abruptly abandon that idea for a different track (and that’s a good thing). The latter’s latest release is a live recording of “oops,” but for the full scope of their sound go back to 2015’s Hair Salon – it’s there you’ll find an album of power punk that is gritty, raw and at times wry.
