Ingrid Michaelson mesmerizes The Fillmore with songs old and new
Singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson lit up the stage with a wonderful set playing to a packed crowd at The Fillmore on Monday night as part of her Hell No tour. Touring in support of her recently released LP, It Doesn’t Have to Make Sense, Michaelson and her five-piece band performed a well-rounded set featuring some of her newest music along with a mix of favorites pulled from her previous five albums. The show started with a dramatically dark stage that lit up as Michaelson came on stage and started singing one of her new songs, “Light Me Up.” After a few songs, the band left the stage and Ingrid performed a couple songs solo acoustic with her ukulele. She played an interesting medley combining “Corner of Your Heart” and “How We Love,” followed by a beautiful cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.”
In between songs, Michaelson talked about the last time she was in Philly, life experiences that inspired her songs, and little stories from everyday life. Her devoted fans were mesmerized and sang along throughout the set. As soon as the band returned to the stage, they performed her very successful song, “The Way I Am.” Midway through the set, she invited her opening band, AJR, to join them onstage to perform their new catchy single, “The Lotto,” which Michaelson and AJR wrote together. After AJR left the stage, the band gathered in a circle to perform “You and I,” with each member taking turns dueting with Michaelson. After “You and I,” show took a break to give the crowd a hilarious photo opp, complete with props and runway music playing in the background. Towards the end of the set, they played a few more new songs and closed out the night with a sing-along of “Hell No.”
The main set was followed with an encore of the hit “Girls Chase Boys.” To close out the night, Michaelson performed a comical cover of Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy,” with each band member dancing around and performing solos. Ingrid Michaelson is consistently one of the best live performers I’ve seen. Between her gorgeous voice, catchy songs, humor, and frequent interactions with the crowd, she and her band yet again put on another memorable show.
Pop trio AJR opened the show with an energetic and entertaining set. Consisting of brothers Adam, Jack, and Ryan Met, the band had a good sound and crowd interaction. After sharing that they started off as street performers playing covers in New York City, they played an upbeat, percussion-heavy cover of The Weekend’s “The Hills.” They created a interesting sound by using loops and incorporating pop culture sound samples into some of their songs. AJR is currently touring with Ingrid Michaelson in support of their recent EP, What Everyone’s Thinking.
