Listen to new material from Chris Forsyth in this NYCTaper recording
In what might be his last show of 2016, Chris Forsyth debuted a new Solar Motel Band configuration and a chunk of new songs at Union Pool in Brooklyn earlier this month. Joined by Peter Kerlin on bass and Ray Kubian on drums, the local guitarist shared three extended compositions, which, if this photo featuring producer Jeff Zeigler is any indication, might appear on a forthcoming follow-up to this year’s The Rarity of Experience LP.
The set begins with the Donovan-esque opening notes of the 16-minute “Dreaming In the Non-Dream, Parts I-II” before moving into bluesier rock realms with “Mistaken The Bottle,” which cuts suddenly from a Rolling Stones-channeling track to a maelstrom of chugging bass, crashing cymbals, and screeching guitar. Closer “American History & Science Fiction” is another long one, a funky showcase of Forsyth’s technical and tonal talent.
The folks up at NYCTaper always catch more than a few Philadelphia-adjacent acts each year – recent addition to their archives include a beautiful set from Daniel Bachman at Trans-Pecos that highlights his recent self-titled album, psych masters Bardo Pond at Union Pool, a tour-wrapping set at Bell House from Steve Gunn, and a flashback to 2015 with a Forsyth – Nick Millevoi duo set at Trans-Pecos.
