A Regina Spektor slow jam spans time and space in the “Black and White” video
Maybe it’s something about old 20th century theaters that go by the name Uptown. The one on North Broad here in Philly has been boarded up to various degress for as long as I can remember, and the similarly named space in Chicago has met with a similar fate since 1981. Inside, of course, is majestic architectural splendor, a mix of ornately designed theatrical nuances and just the incredible handcrafted look that theaters had a hundred years ago, a look that dwindled as the century progressed.
Regina Spektor likens Chicago’s Uptown to “a castle that fell asleep,” and recently teamed up with filmmaker Daniel Ryan to shoot a music video there for “Black and White,” a slow jam from her 2016 album Remember Us To Life. As warm sunbeams break through the windows, Spektor performs to an empty auditorium while a ballet dancer moves around the stage and the building’s interior, enveloping the entire space and creating a dreamlike bridge between bygone days and the present.
Watch the video below, and catch Regina Spektor when she performs at The Fillmore on Monday, March 13th. Tickets and more information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar; check out the full run of tour dates below.
