David Bowie doc coming to HBO, features footage of Blackstar recording sessions and more
U.S. fans will soon have a chance to step into the Thin White Duke’s world thanks to a new documentary called David Bowie: The Last Five Years. Originally aired on the BBC in January, HBO has acquired the rights and will give the doc its U.S. premiere on a date TBA.
Directed by Francis Whately, the documentary follows Bowie during the production of The Next Day, Blackstar, and his Lazarus musical. As Brooklyn Vegan reports, it’s filled with interviews with the people he was closest to in his final years, including Tony Visconti, and features rare behind-the-scenes footage of recording sessions.
Though it’s been over a year since the release of Blackstar and Bowie’s seemingly sudden death, the legendary musician was honored just last week at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards with several wins, including Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Song for the title track.
