Listen to Joey Sweeney & the Neon Grease’s mellow new track “Digital Light”
Native Philadelphian Joey Sweeney has been writing songs and playing music since the 80s. Though he has gone through many iterations (including The Barnabys, The Trouble With Sweeney, and Arctic Splash, as well as solo work), his brand-new project Joey Sweeney & the Neon Grease is already making quite the impact. Neon Grease first appeared on our radar earlier this summer with debut single “Baptized In Vibe,” a song about Sweeney’s upbringing in 1970s Fishtown, followed last month by retro jam “Black Ice.”
Now, Joey Sweeney & the Neon Grease have dropped another single, reportedly leading up to the five-piece’s debut album. Title and release date are as of yet unknown, but we may be able to expect the album before the end of 2017, according to American Songwriter. The smooth alt-rock track “Digital Light” is a nod to the smartphone-filled age we’re living in, exploring the effect — both aesthetic and psychological — our technology has on us. Sweeney says of the track:
“There is this druggy kind of relinquishment that many of us — myself included — have with our screens, and that in those moments, the sadness of this is reflected in the light those devices throw right back at us … I’m certainly not the first person to noticed this. But I think it’s also an accident of aesthetics that this specific light has this certain cast of blue and that we see spots of it now everywhere go, on the street at night, in our very bedrooms. I think I wanted to write about, and sing about, that particular color and vibe and its new universality, if that’s the right way to put it.”
