WKDU announces 14th annual Electronic Music Marathon
College radio? Playing 86 straight hours of electronic music? Raising money for Philly AIDS Thrift? Yes, count us in. WKDU, the student-run radio station of Drexel University, has been throwing its annual Electronic Music Marathon for 14 years now, and this year’s event seems like the most ambitious yet. The marathon starts at noon on Friday, Oct. 6 and runs until midnight on Monday, Oct. 9. WKDU has chosen Philly AIDS Thrift as this year’s nonprofit partner; they’ll split the money raised during the event.
Over the past three marathons, WKDU has raised over $10,000 for charities including the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, Mural Arts Philadelphia, Village of Arts & Humanities, and Musicopia. You may be familiar with this year’s partner, Philly AIDS Thrift, from the quirky treasure trove that is their thrift store down on S. 5th Street. The nonprofit donates the store’s proceeds to several local organizations involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
In addition, the EMM is for the first time venturing out of KDU studios, off the airwaves and into the public sphere this year, with beneficiaries Philly Aids Thrift hosting a Saturday listening party from noon to 6 p.m.:
…AND then at 10pm our first floor is going to turn into the most exclusive, temporary night spot in town. We’ll be moving the racks out to make way for a LIVE BROADCAST DISCO PARTY from 10pm to 2am. Tickets are VERY LIMITED and VERY CHEAP (@ $10 each) and will only be available that night at the door (so get there by 10pm).
Tune to WKDU here, and brace yourself for the onslaught of good jams coming your way during next week’s marathon. Listen to some sets from 2016’s EMM below and read John Vettese’s recap of the 2015 event here.
