St. Vincent riffs on dependency in “Pills” ahead of her album release this Friday

St. Vincent, is set to release her new album MASSEDUCTION on Friday, but first she hints at some themes from the album with her new single “Pills.”

“Pills” is a track that seems fun on the surface, but which unpacks the prescription drug epidemic that has become a major problem in the past decade or so. The song makes it clear: it is possible to obtain a drug for any ailment or need nowadays, and it is very easy to become addicted. The issue is an important one for prominent artists like St. Vincent to speak out on, particularly with such a terrific piece of music.

In addition to a compelling lyrical approach, “Pills” is a very advanced song in terms of arrangements and melody — thanks to an all-star team of collaborators featuring Jenny Lewis, Kamasi Washington, actress Cara Delevingne, Bleachers and fun. frontman Jack Antonoff, and Kendrick Lamar collaborator Sounwave producing the beat. With a catchy, fast-paced chorus and rapid lyrical patterns, the song simmers on the bridge and culminates with a couple gorgeous saxophone measures.
