Watch Julien Baker’s new video for “Turn Out The Lights” ahead of her Union Transfer show
Julien Baker‘s lead single “Appointments” from her upcoming sophomore LP Turn Out The Lights has been giving us chills for the last two months. The album — a highly-anticipated follow-up to 2015’s Sprained Ankle — is out in just over two weeks, and we’ve been anxiously awaiting another murmur from Baker camp. Today, it’s finally arrived in the form of title track “Turn Out The Lights” and a beautiful video to go along with it.
Baker has the remarkable ability to create vulnerable, heart wrenching songs that are comforting and devastating at the same time, and the new track is certainly no exception. The video starts off with the soft crunch of leaves as we see Baker wandering contemplatively through the woods. Building slowly, Baker’s smooth and soaring vocals are expertly layered with her own harmonies, creating a fuller sound than her previous recordings but remaining hauntingly intimate. “When I turn out the lights, there’s no one left between myself and me,” Baker sings with an air of loneliness met only by the strength of the glowing fire.
Reach for the nearest box of tissues and watch the video below. Turn Out The Lights is out Oct. 27 via Matador Records, and Baker plays Union Transfer on Oct. 29 — you might want to get your tickets sooner rather than later. Synth-pop outfit Half Waif is opening, and Petal was recently added to the bill as well, so if you’re going to catch any gig in this October full of great gigs, this one should probably be on your list.
