Joining us for our latest Indie Rock Hit Parade Live Session is the Toronto-based band Weaves. Formed in 2012 by singer Jasmyn Burke and guitarist Morgan Waters, Weaves also features bassist Zach Bines and drummer Spencer Cole. The group released their second album, Wide Open, earlier this year on Kanine Records, and stopped by our studio before their show at the Boot & Saddle to perform some of the new songs live.

Beginning with the glittery stomp of “Slicked,” Weaves kick off the session with swagger to spare. The fuzzed-out “#53” comes next. Originally released an an advance single, the song is a headrush of energy. “La La” comes next and is maybe the closest to “Americana” as the band gets on the new album. Though that descriptor was make (somewhat) jokingly, Burke’s acoustic guitar strumming and sing-song vocals make “La La” an irresistible earworm. Finally, there’s “Scream.” Without a doubt the most experimental song in Weaves’ repertoire, the skeletal performance is as intense as its studio counterpart (even without the one-of-a-kind contributions from Tanya Tagaq).
