Kississippi comes into their own with “Cut Yr Teeth,” the first single from their SideOneDummy debut Sunset Blush
Kississippi is back, and stronger than ever. The recording project of Zoe Reynolds has become such a fixture of the Philly music scene lately that it’s easy to forget it’s been two years since their debut EP, We Have No Future, We’re All Doomed, was released. The XPN Fest alum has certainly kept busy over those last two years, though, and just announced that their first full-length, Sunset Blush, will be released in April 2018 via SideOneDummy Records.
Along with this news comes our first glimpse of the forthcoming album in the form of lead single “Cut Yr Teeth,” which features backing vocals from Mary Allen of Tombo Crush. Under its bright indie pop sheen, the song touches on overcoming trauma and reclaiming strength, themes that we can expect the rest of the album to delve even deeper into. “You’ve never felt sorry at all,” Reynolds repeats with building confidence, turning a painful experience into inspiration and motivation for growth. She expertly balances the feeling of loss with the empowering act of taking control, coming into her voice as an artist, her vulnerabilities and fears mixed with a burning determination to emerge better than those who have wronged her.
Reynolds said in a press release:
“‘Cut Yr Teeth’ is about recognizing the toxicity of a relationship, and letting go of it along with your trust for the other half. I wrote this song (and most of the forthcoming record) about finding my voice after having it taken away time and time again by people I thought were more powerful than me. I know now that they were wrong, and that’s what this album is all about.”
