Listen to Daniel de Jesús’ new live album, New Work / Body Works
This past December, Philadelphia cellist, singer, and songwriter Daniel de Jesús delivered a spiritual live performance at the Moore College of Art. De Jesús constructed the intimate performance around themes from the 1928 silent film, The Passion of Joan of Arc, and the 11-song set is an Artpop Requiem dedicated to the protagonist.
On the album, De Jesús blends Baroque string arrangements with thumping electronic drum loops. Shimmering, bright keys accompany lush sting arrangements to create a warm soundscape, as highlighted on closing-track “Virgen del Carmen.” However, the most noticeable and commanding aspect of the performance is de Jesús’s piercing, bright vocals. Featured in both English and Spanish, de Jesús’ vocals command the attention of the audience and provides a platform to depict the story of Joan of Arc. Weaving and layering these various elements with a clear narrative in mind, de Jesús is able to produce a beautiful modern-day tribute.
Daniel De Jesús performs at The Balcony Bar at The Trocadero Friday, January 12. Information and tickets can be found on Facebook.
