Palm’s “Dog Milk” video tells us it’s all happening at the zoo
Philadelphia experimental rock mindbenders Palm are readying the release of Rock Island, their latest full-length record, which drops February 9th on Carpark Records. This week, they released an appropriately mind-bendy video for its song “Dog Milk.”
Filmed by Richard Phillip Smith, Daniel Patrick Brennan, and Darby Irrgang, the video takes in the sights and sounds of the Philadelphia Zoo: big cats, slinking primates, squaking birds, and the like. Zoos are inherently weird places, with their non-human population confined in much closer quarters than their natural habitat would be — trapped, some would say — but at the same time, they’re protected from the dangers posed by the evils of humanity and the ravages of nature, they’re cared for. So, break even? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The video captures that oddity with herkey-jerkey, start-stop cuts, the animals and visitors moving like wind-up toys. Intermixed with similarly styled footage of the band performing on a Philadelphia rooftop, or of cars pulling in to a Lehigh Avenue gas station, the tension of the footage pairs well with the nervous sounds and rhythms of the song.
Palm heads out on tour next week, kicking off with two New England dates opening for a band they’re oft compared to, Deerhoof. After the trek around the country that follows, they headline the First Unitarian Church on March 26th. Tickets and more information on that show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar, and the full tour dates are below, along with the “Dog Milk” video.
