The Rentiers team up with Lydia Loveless to depict state of the scene on “Fake English Accent”

Philly indie-rockers The Rentiers just returned new single “Fake English Accent,” their first track since their 2017 LP Bring me the Finest World Map Shower Curtain in all the Land. The track follows the lives of two unlikely characters to cross paths, a post-grad recently returning to the States and a displaced Mainline-r who finds herself in the city. With descriptive vocals laid over crunchy keys and guitars, this punk/dance track is an observational critique of “the scene” at times.

Lead singer Joel Tannenbaum plays the role of raconteur throughout this tale, channeling similar sentiments James Murphy may have felt during the “Losing My Edge”-era. “Fake English Accent” depicts fictitious gig “Brought to you by Monster Energy Drink / In conjunction with Orange Amps, Red Bull and Pabst.” While it may be a little sensationalized, Tannenbaum’s image is a not-so-far-fetched observation of certain facets of the modern-day music scene.

Providing backup vocals and trading parts through the chorus is Lydia Loveless. Connected though the Durham, N.C. scene by the song’s producer and frequent Rentiers collaborator, Sammy Sandwich, Loveless and Tannenbaum join forces to trade phrases though the chorus.
