Jokquil laments soured love in new Cardi B cover

It seems that most people on the planet right now are rooting for Cardi B ever since the start of her world domination with 2017’s “Bodak Yellow.” Among the people on Team Bardi is 22 year old North Philly rapper/producer Jokquil of the Legend Bond collective. In the spirit of the recently-past mercury retrograde, he recently released an emotional cover of Cardi B’s “Thru Your Phone.”

His cover features heavy drums and bass, ominous reverb, and amazingly rich saxophone for embellishment, all of highlight the slightly more aggressive spin on the heartbreak anthem. Lyrically, he took a really clever approach, finding lines from the original that resonated and could be repurposed in his style such as “And you’ll never replace me / Resentment all through my playlist.” Around the 2:35 mark, the production frenzies to head banging intensity, with a sample from the original to close it out.
