Woven In releases surreal new visual EP, Razzmatazz
Woven In, the enigmatic recording vehicle for songwriter and musical auteur Mariah Fortune, has released a new EP, Razzmatazz, and a surreal 20 minute video—created entirely by Fortune on her phone—to accompany it.
The EP fuses abstract indie rock songwriting with cold analog-synth textures and sparse, dadaistic lyrics reminiscent of avant-pop contemporaries Dean Blunt and John Maus. It’s a challenging, sometimes unsettling listen, but the unrelentingly tense atmosphere makes the few glimpses of pop familiarity all the more rewarding, particularly on opener “Hooptie” and the spaced out surf-rocker “Studio Burning.”
The album’s visual accompaniment is fittingly unconventional; a hyper-stylized collage of digital art, video footage, and gaudy text that captures the music’s hallucinogenic spirit while dispelling none of its mystery. Taken as a whole, Razzmatazz is a bundle of questions with few answers; a uniquely contemporary piece of psychedelia sure to thrill fans of art rock at its most experimental.
You can stream Razzmatazz here and watch the accompanying video below. Woven In is currently on an East Coast tour with Slow Groan, and plays Atlanta tonight. Dates and details in the poster below.
