Watch Meek Mill debuts his powerful new track “Stay Woke” with Miguel at the BET Awards
Meek Mill gave a powerful performance Sunday night at the BET awards in Los Angeles with the debut of his new track “Stay Woke” featuring Miguel. In it, the Philly rapper goes in on topics about police brutality and prison reform issues.
As he delivers a series of bars:
“We scream black lives matter but we still toting ladders.
Watching our own brothers trying to get at us
Dreams get shattered when a scene full of crackers and they charge you with some shit you ain’t do
You like what happen
We go get lawyers to say shit we don’t know how to talk
They told us to hate each other before we learn how to walk”
Meek’s performance set a theatrical street corner scene for the audience with kids playing in the background and people hanging out on the streets. As the song goes on, things get serious as he gives the audience, at the theater and at home, an emotional reenactment of real life events as police officers storm the scene, a child is shot, and his grieving mother’s wails echo throughout the venue.
During the performance, Meek Mill reps a sweatshirt honoring the last rappers XXXTentacion in the front and Pittsburgh’s Jimmy Wopo on the back. Both were killed earlier this week. He says:
“How can I pledge allegiance to the flag, when they killing all our sons, all our dads? I come from a place where you kill your own brother, you can brag”
