cheeky goes from heady to clubby and back on her new ep, flora
Philadelphia electronic artist cheeky released her second EP, titled flora, this past weekend. Solo project of Kaylee Sabatino, cheeky draws influence from the likes of Grimes, Animal Collective, and Beach House. The convergence of these genre-blending electronic acts is apparent in cheeky’s work while adding an experimental twist of her own.
Many of the palatial tracks contain a grounding quality in the percussive work, a study backbone to otherwise fluid soundscapes. Tracks like the opener “HOUSE” along with “LISTEN” and “DARKRED” have low end help from deep, thumping kicks. The opener turns from heady to clubby real quick, like a beam of white light breaking through the haze on a dance floor.
Previously released track “MONCHÉRI” is as woozy as ever, appearing third out of six tracks on this project. First released as a single last October, the track provides a solid representation of the rest of the EP to anyone who may have heard the track previously.
