Yowler comes to terms with herself on the new single “WTFK”

Maryn Jones is well-known for her work with the pop punk All Dogs and folk rock band Saintseneca, but she also leads her own lo-fi project called Yowler. Yowler’s second album, Black Dog In My Path releases October 12 on Double Double Whammy, and today we got a taste of its lead single “WTFK.”

Where debut album The Offer (2015) was composed of faint, wavering vocals and dark acoustic guitar, “WTFK” tackles a more rugged sound. The opening lyrics are backed by a grinding, robust bass line combined with starry synths that balances a tipping seesaw between gloom and hope, like shards of light piercing through thick clouds.

Of the song’s meaning, Jones tells NPR Musicm that it encompasses her journey to overcome lingering self-hatred as a result of her religious background. “Coming to terms with certain aspects of your personality and your behavior can be a challenge, but why hate or hurt yourself? As long as you’re being responsible for your actions and not harming anyone else, why not let yourself be yourself?”
