Sleepy Freak grows up with baby steps
The last we heard from Sleepy Freak was in a collaborative split with Greg Mendez, but Kate Lord has at last returned with the release of baby steps, her strongest work to date.
The guitar work in opening track “centerfold” is a meticulous web strung across corners, Lord’s vocals unfaltering. The scathingly unapologetic “frat boys in docs” — a possible reference to a piece of graffiti spotted in the Everybody Hits bathroom — portrays a college relationship, the lyrics pulsing with distaste. “You came here just to get high / Smoke out back and I’ll lock the door / I don’t want to see you anymore.” It captures what it feels like to realize you’ve grown out of someone, that you deserve better.
This claiming of self is at the core of Lord’s work — she refuses to go unseen. Listen to the EP below.
