J Pope and Songs in the Key of Free will play Weathervane Music’s winter studio concert
Local nonprofit Weathervane Music invites us to close out 2018 with them at an intimate studio concert next month at Miner Street Recordings, the organization’s home-base studio in Fishtown which you may recognize as the backdrop to their Shaking Through series. The December 7 show will feature performances by “artists we think have an important message to share through their music,” as Weathervane writes on Facebook.
The show includes a headlining set by J Pope and the HearNow, the project of Baltimore singer and rapper Jasmine Pope, who blends activism into her music with backing from her jazz/funk ensemble. A performance by local collaborative venture Songs in the Key of Free will open the evening; the collective’s justice-focused music works to challenge mass incarceration and reform the prison system.
Below, watch J Pope and the HearNow’s performance of “How Long” for Weathervane’s Shaking Through series and see a short documentary about Songs in the Key of Free. Find more information on the concert at the XPN Concert Calendar.
