Annachristie Sapphire returns with ethereal folk gem “Bonsai”
Nomadic singer-songwriter Annachristie Sapphire seems to be in a different city every time I hear from her. Usually it’s some art and cultural haven — Asheville, NC, or Portland, OR, or somewhere along the California coast — but she got her start here in the Philadelphia scene as the lead vocalist of the indie folk ensemble Sisters 3 with her siblings Beatrice and Cas. Since moving away from the city about four years ago, she’s released tracks under her own name (replace the “Sapphire” with “Sadler” and you’ve got it) and under the name Murchant, but the first full-length under her newly rechristened Annachristie Sapphire banner is on the horizon for next year.
The project is tentatively titled Desert Car, and today Sadler released the first song from it, “Bonsai,” a magical echo-bathed number with an ethereal melody that soars and descends. Annachristie calls it her favorite song on the record, and tells us it is a means of making sense of heartbreak.
I wrote this song in about 30 minuets in joshua tree CA using a spring reverb mixer, it has a haunting melody that was like a whale call pouring out of my broken heart at the time.The song is about realizing that tho i thought i knew real love i had not….It is meant as a healing prayer for the broken hearted. And to continue the search for a real love whether from another human or a real love for yourself.
