Philly’s (Sandy) Alex G spent Friday night performing the first of two sold out shows at First Unitarian Church along with support from Brooklyn’s Half Waif. Alex G has been touring off his 2017 album Rocket, one of my personal favorites of last year, and brought it to his hometown for a much more intimate performance than his Union Transfer headliner last summer.

Once Half Waif’s Nandi Rose Plunkett stepped on stage, the crowd started to slowly trickle in. From seeing her perform as a trio earlier this year when they opened for Julien Baker, it was an unexpected sweetness to see her play completely solo. She performed songs off her album Lavender, that came out earlier this year, and introduced a new song she called “Capsule” as well. The crowd started to get more into it and begin dancing as the set continued, moving along to Half Waif’s synth-driven rhythm.

When the changeover music quickly started to play to “Life Is A Highway”, the crowd shouted and cheered as they knew it was time for Alex G to take the stage. Starting out with “Whale” from Trick to “After Ur Gone” off DSU to the songs off Rocket, it was a versatile set from the jump. Coming on stage for “Bobby” was Half Waif guesting on vocals and Molly Germer on violin. The night continued on as the band powered through their setlist of a similar vibe, playing songs off various Alex G albums from over the years.
