Mural Arts to rededicate Dixie Hummingbirds Mural this weekend
Mural Arts Philadelphia is hosting a rededication of The Legendary Dixie Hummingbirds mural, in honor of the gospel group’s 90th anniversary.
The Dixie Hummingbirds are a widely acclaimed gospel groups that originated in South Carolina in 1928, before moving to Philadelphia in the 1940s. The mural was created in 2005 by Cliff Eubanks and is located in North Philadelphia, just a block away from the Metropolitan Opera House where they often performed in the 1970s.
Along with the rededication ceremony, Mural Arts is announcing a new mural of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the “Godmother of Rock and Roll”, created by Ernel Martinez. The Belize-born artist is currently based in Philly, and his socially engaging artwork focuses on community collaboration.
