Long-running Philly rockers Dr. Dog spent most of 2018 touring in support of Critical Equation, their tenth studio album, and today they’ve released a couple outtakes from that collection as a digital 7″ single.

Both songs find bassist and co-songwriter Toby Leaman taking lead; “Can She Dance,” the A-side, juxtaposes a midtempo groove with frenzied spoken/sung lyrics. As a huge piano chord heralds the chorus, harmony vocals rise in the background, reminiscent of Leonard Cohen’s 1992 album The Future

The B-side, “Can’t Catch Me,” has soaring vocals and a laid-back pace, with melodic references (intentional or otherwise, we can’t tell) to Dr. Dog back-catalog faves, “Jackie Wants a Black Eye” and “Army of Ancients.”
