Philly indie scene vets Carly Marcoux and Joshua Alvarez have teamed up in a new lo-fi pop project called Aspect Ratio, and the band’s first digital single hit the internet yesterday. The project fuses not only the bandmates’ love of homemade independent music, but also classic cult cinema.

Sonically, Aspect Ratio’s music leans more towards the gritty minimalist rock / pop of Marcoux’s bands like The Pretty Greens, moreso than Alvarez’s heartfelt introspective punk balladry. Thematically, the band calls the single “a love letter to the movies,” with the digital a-side “Davenport” inspired by Dawn Davenport, a character in John Waters’ Female Trouble, while the b-side shares its name with the the nihilistic dark comedy Daisies by Czech director Věra Chytilová.

The band is taking a very in-the-moment approach to Aspect Ratio, saying in a press statement “We’ll see where the songs take us; and if we don’t like it, what we’re playing, or feel good about it — then we won’t do it.”
