Mannequin Pussy is all about self-love and self-empowerment on “Who You Are”
On the latest teaser from Mannequin Pussy‘s new album Patience, singer-guitarist Marisa Dabice and her bandmates deliver soaring hooks and solid advice in what might be their most pop moment to date — fear not though, punks, as Dabice tells us via Twitter that the badass rock and roll is on the way.
Still, though, let’s not discount the pop stuff, since they’re really freaking good at it. “Who You Are” is melodic and memorable as its hook explores ideas of self-acceptance, self-love, self-empowerment — and how the negative self-image many of us harbor is something that’s pushed on us from the outside. “Who taught you to hate the way you are?” Dabice sings, acknowledging that she’s not immune from that rabbit hole of despair.
“…I’ve been guilty of staring at myself
Look in the mirror,
Wish I was somebody else
and why?”
