Sturgill Simpson shares the twangy and haunting theme song for The Dead Don’t Die

Sturgill Simpson can now add “movie star” to his resume. The renowned country singer is a part of Jim Jarmusch’s new, star-studded, zombie film The Dead Don’t Die. The film, which opened Friday, also boasts performances by Adam Driver, Bill Murray, Iggy Pop, Selena Gomez, RZA, Tom Waits, Chloë Sevigny and more. In addition to acting in the movie, Simpson has provided its theme song, also titled “The Dead Don’t Die”. The twangy and woozy song soundtracks the film’s opening credits and alludes to the eventual appearance of the undead.

“The Dead Don’t Die” is Simpson’s first release since 2016’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, which was lauded by critics and The Recording Academy. It is unclear if “The Dead Won’t Die” will also appear on a future Simpson project, or if such a project is even in the works. For now, all we have is the the piano and fiddle soaked ballad and its promise of a wild zombie adventure.

The movie tells the story of a small town that is plagued by zombies, leaving the living to fight for their lives. Pretty ordinary and relatable stuff. Earlier this month a clip from the movie showing Gomez’s character buying a Sturgill Simpson CD was released. From that it is safe to assume that Simpson will play himself in the film and that he is just as beloved in its universe as he is in ours.
