Whitney’s new track “Valleys (My Love)” is nostalgic and poignant
Whitney pleased fans early this week with yet another teaser for their upcoming album, Forever Turned Around, due August 30th via Secretly Canadian. Their newest single “Valleys (My Love)” comes with a music video directed by Nick Woytuk that portrays the life of a truck driver.
The song is light and rootsy, just the way Whitney likes it. Julien Ehrlich’s vocals dance atop gentle keyboard plunks, complementary string arrangements, and a swelling horn section. The track alone induces a feeling of nostalgia, and the music video makes that feeling undeniable. Most of the footage consists of wide shots of a tractor-trailer driving through the beautiful Portland, Oregon, with vintage-looking nature shots sprinkled in. They give us a glimpse into the truck driver’s mind, as if we know that he’s thinking about a different time and place.
As we watch the truck driver look at old pictures, eat alone at a diner, and pull over to watch the sunrise, the adjacency of the images and the music tell a poignant story about him. Somehow, even though most of us have probably never driven an 18 wheeler, we can relate to him.
Whitney will play Union Transfer on September 27th. Find ticket info here and check out “Valleys (My Love)” down below.
