New York-based indie rock band Vivian Girls called it quits in 2014, playing their last show in Brooklyn, where it all started. Since then, a lot has changed. Now all living in LA, the trio have decided to reunite and release their first album in nine years, Memory. Along with announcing the album, they’ve put out a single, “Sick,” and announced a string of reunion tour dates.
Vivian Girls is composed of singer-bassist Katy Goodman, singer-guitarist Cassie Ramone, and drummer Ali Koehler. Ramone’s lyrics echoed themes of love and rage, a true romantic at heart. Slowly growing a loyal following, fans of the group could count on them to deliver a strong sense of self that could resonate with listeners. Their new track, “Sick,” calls back to this sound, showcasing the raw, indie pop aesthetic that they have been known for. Pounding drums from Koehler and washed out harmonies from Ramone and Goodman shape the shoegazy track.
Ramone told Rolling Stone that she was “originally trying to recruit a backing band for my next solo album.” After meeting back up with Goodman, the two decided to reunite and begin working on a new record. Memory, releasing September 20th on Polyvinyl, will be filled with similar themes as previous albums and tracks: love and toxic relationships, mental health, and acceptance. Additionally, the bands first two records will also be reissued: 2008’s Vivian Girls and 2009’s Everything Goes Wrong.
Back with a passion and reignited musical flame, Vivian Girls will be heading on tour this fall, stopping by First Unitarian Church on October 18th. Check out “Sick” and the Vivian Girls tour dates below.
