Watch The Districts dance to the beat of isolation in the new “Cheap Regrets” video
Philly rock four-piece The Districts channels Joy Division on their new single, “Cheap Regrets,” the latest to emerge from their soon-to-be-released fourth LP You Know I’m Not Going Anywhere.
The wiry song is guided by the rhythm section — swift beats by Braden Lawrence, a sick groove by Connor Jacobus — while Pat Cassidy lays down atmospheric leads, and frontperson Rob Grote’s urgent vocal cries breathlessly lay out feelings of isolation and detachment as the world burns.
That gets a very palpable visual component in a new music video directed by Laura-Lynne Petrick when Grote wanders various sidewalks of Philadelphia clad in a business suit, carrying a briefcase, reading a Wall Street Journal newspaper that bursts into flames somewhere along the rail park.
As Grote describes it in a statement:
“Cheap Regrets” is some late capitalist nihilism channeled into a Districts dance party. It’s about the extremes of American culture constantly reinforcing the self. The mirror reconfirms you. It’s all iPhone, selfies, and mirrors. Sell yourself baby. The consumer gets consumed. I wanted people to dance together to a song about alienation to find some collective transcendence in that.”
Watch the “Cheap Regrets” video below, and check out The Districts’ 2020 tour itinerary. They’ll play Union Transfer on Thursday, March 12th, the day before You Know I’m Not Going Anywhere releases on Fat Possum Records. Get tickets and more information on the show at the XPN Concert Calendar.
