A message from Gene Shay’s family to the Folk Community
Since hearing the sad news about the passing of the legendary Gene Shay from the coronavirus last Friday evening, there has been an incredible outpouring of love for Gene. Below is a statement sent to us on behalf of his daughters, Rachel and Elana, and their family.
The family has asked contributions in his honor be made to the MusiCares COVID-19 relief fund.
Thank you to all of Gene’s many friends who have reached out with their love and support. He was a wonderful and loving father and grandfather, and we’re going to miss him.
Thank you to WXPN, Ian Zolitor, David Dye, Michaela Majoun, Helen Leicht, Bruce Warren and all of Gene’s radio peers that he has had the pleasure to work with over the years including Michael Tearson and Ed Sciaky.
A big thank you to all of the many amazing musicians who agreed to appear live on his Sunday night folk show, and all the performers he had the pleasure of introducing at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and the many other live shows he was honored to MC. He had a wonderful life, and you were his inspiration and his calling. He was honored when so many talented musicians donated their time at his retirement party, and so many benefit concerts over the years.
Most of all, thank you to the Philadelphia Folksong Society, and all of the many folk music fans who listened to his Sunday Night Folk Show, and came to the Philadelphia Folk Festival and the many other events in the Philadelphia area. He was honored to introduce you to new music, and to do his part to grow the ranks of folk music fans.
