Pine Barons fuse pensive moods with playful melodies on new single “Colette”
Though Philly psych rock five-piece Pine Barons loves to explore moody emotive spaces, they also excel at uplifting pop. Their new single, “Colette,” does both.
Our first taste of the band’s new album Mirage on the Meadow, the song rides a nervy, textured pulse of ghostly synthesizers and wiry guitars, but once frontperson Keith Abrams’ vocals enter, it’s uplifting and melodious. The music video for “Colette” walks the same line, juxtaposing macabre, horror flick visual tropes with a sense of playful irreverence.
In a chat with American Songwriter about Mirage on the Meadow, Abrams says “I think the record, as a whole, brings about themes of feeling like you’re running out of time, longing for love, and being afraid of death. But ‘Colette’ sort of feels free from these sorts of things, and is maybe more enlightened.”
Watch the video below, and look for the song on streaming services this week; Mirage on the Meadow is due out later this year via Grind Select.
