KillerWhale’s latest singles aim to raise money for artists impacted by COVID-19
KillerWhale’s latest pair of singles, “Down For A G” and “LuvPair-O-Dice,” showcase a fresh, bouncy take on catchy future funk. The double single release is a part of Atlantics X, a fundraising campaign run by KillerWhale (aka Nate McIntyre)’s label, Astro Nautico (which also features Kingsley Ibeneche, Lee “Lebeet” Clark). The campaign functions as a series of releases by Astro Nautico artists, including singles, albums, music videos, and other projects. Atlantics X aims to raise funds to create an “emergency microfund” to support artists who have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Down For A G” combines Stevie Wonder-esque vocoder riffs with crunchy, futuristic drums that wouldn’t sound out of place on a PC Music release. KillerWhale swaps between singing smooth verses and dishing out laid-back bars, while a piercing electric guitar plays backup to the vocals. The track is effortlessly cool, especially accentuated when KillerWhale breaks up the bridge by dropping into the lower end of the mix to whisper the words “good time.”
The ‘b-side’ of the release, “LuvPair-O-Dice” was featured on Season 5 of Netflix’s Queer Eye reboot, set in Philly. This track is notably slower than “Down For A G,” bringing a sultry, funky R&B flavor to the release. KillerWhale’s vocals are tripled across multiple octaves as he bounces along syncopated melodic lines. Like “Down For A G,” this track glides by like a warm summer breeze.
