New Jersey indie rock outfit Afloat released its first new recording of 2020, an anthemic song called “Can’t Slow Down” which, despite having its title annotated with an “*demo” denotation, feels raw and riveting thanks to a powerful mix by singer-guitarist Gabby Relos.

Sweeps of big, tremolo guitar chords lead into the two-minute track, and Relos sings of personal loss, distance from personal trauma, and the way those yearning emotions shift over time: “I felt the change in the air, I knew I wouldn’t see you anywhere.” The song’s tone has one foot in emo-tinged indie, one foot in modern rock, and we’re looking forward to the fully formed version, whenever that gets released.
