Matt Berninger spins around a “Distant Axis” on new single

The National frontman Matt Berninger has released the newest single, “Distant Axis,” from his debut solo album, Serpentine Prison. The first single from the upcoming album, the titular “Serpentine Prison,” was released in May; the album will be released October 2nd via Book Records.

“Distant Axis” opens with peaceful guitar strumming, mirrored in the music video by calm shots of Berninger putting on new shoes in his garden. “If only you, if only you would come / Around the distant axis,” he sings, while writhing around on the floor. Literally losing control of his body, Berninger eventually collapses to the ground, as the tranquil guitar chords fade into a somber piano outro.
