Watch Marissa Paternoster play songs on LAVA Space’s old, leaky roof
Beloved West Philly community venue LAVA Space needs some help. Its old, leaky roof has to be replaced to ensure that musicians and local organizers will be able to use the space for shows and gatherings in the future.
The pandemic has made generating income from live events impossible, so a fundraiser is in order. Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females and Noun played three songs for the first installment of the new monthly series “Broken Roof Sessions.” Her set includes “I Lost You” and “Shame,” along with a cover of “That’s All There Is” by Nina Nastasia, all performed three stories up on the broken roof itself.
In addition to shows, LAVA Space is also used by several community organizations and frequently hosts food and clothing distributions. LAVA’s Ian Winter introduces the video, and asks for donations so “when this pandemic is over everybody can come back here and listen to music and do organizing and the food distro and the clothing distro and [use] the library and the computer lab and all the things that we do here, which really require a roof that doesn’t leak. If you can throw some money in, it’ll help us survive this crazy situation.”
