“I want a house with a crowded table.” The lyrics from The Highwomen’s “Crowded Table” take on a completely new meaning in the messiness of 2020, and perhaps that is why they chose it to perform on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

The country super-group of Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires made a virtual return to Fallon’s show, performing the track from their 2019 debut self-titled LP. Although the lyrics of the song may serve as a metaphor for this year, its original meaning centers around women coming together despite differences rooted in intersecting identities. “Crowded Table” incorporates themes of love and politics, which are overarching in the quartet’s album.

The group sings in the verse, “If we want a garden / We’re gonna have to sow the seed.” These lyrics seem to speak to starting at the very beginning with compassion and understanding in order to get to an ideal place. The track is a welcoming song, showcasing the group’s vocal harmony and resourcefulness of each member’s unique voice.
