No Thank You builds on self-discovery in jangly new single “Everything or Nothing”
In their latest slew of fun-sized singles, Philadelphia trio No Thank You turns to their indie-pop-punk sound as a form of powerful self-release. “Everything or Nothing,” the third single off their upcoming album Embroidered Foilage, follows the dazzling “Enough” and “Letter Writing Contest” as a power-pop track with heavy walls of sound.
No Thank You’s 2018 LP All it Takes to Ruin It All is a record that served as a grieving and healing outlet for lead singer Kaytee Della Monica after the passing of her father. This process continues to unfold for Monica on the upcoming record, as she explained in a press release her grieving to be immensely challenging. “Writing our last record was cathartic,” she explained. “But I needed more.”
“Everything or Nothing” is a simultaneously intimate and roaring track, with Della Monica’s rich vocals singing of the uncertainty of a tumultuous relationship, “Is it everything or nothing / but I’ll never be what he wants me to be.” Her voice finds more strength as it’s accompanied by an uplifting backing from Evan Bernard’s bass, the punch of Nick Holdorf’s pounding drums, and a progressively building guitar riff.
While No Thank You’s forthcoming album was created from a foundation of emotional challenges, their sound exudes confidence in their bold songwriting and melodies and serves as a form of release. Della Monica’s deeply personal and self-reflective lyrics are met with a dynamic and reverberating backing that both allude to the complexities of her experience and empower her on the way through.
