Son Little’s “Goddess Wine” is euphoric, cosmic bliss
Son Little, the project of Philly-rooted singer-guitarist Aaron Livingston, is back with a new single and a new sound. Titled “Goddess Wine,” the track stands in stark opposition to the funky, bluesy soul displayed on his last LP, aloha.
“Goddess Wine” is markedly more abstract, with tenuous, echoing drums and spacey synths lending a cosmic energy to the spacious soundscape. Son Little describes the track as having similarities to “an avant-garde deep cut from Frank Ocean,” as such, the track wouldn’t sound out of place on Blonde or Endless.
Despite the production sounding somewhat similar to Frank Ocean, Son Little’s songwriting maintains distinctly unique; his soul influences still ring through on the vocal melodies especially. In fact, there’s a hint of Michael Kiwanuka‘s “Cold Little Heart” on this track’s hook. “Goddess Wine” shows a strong new direction for Son Little, and we’re eagerly anticipating a follow-up in this vein.
