Questlove will explore the life and legacy of Sly Stone in upcoming documentary
When Questlove made his directorial debut with Summer of Soul, it was met with critical acclaim, winning two different awards at the Sundance Film Festival. And now he is set to follow that up with a documentary about Sly Stone, the iconic frontperson of Sly and the Family Stone.
While Sly and the Family Stone was featured in Summer of Soul, that film was a look at the 1969 Harlem Culture Festival as a whole; this documentary will put all of the focus squarely on Stone. In his announcement of this untitled documentary, Questlove made clear the importance of the project: “It’s a Black musician’s blueprint. To be given the honor to explore his history and legacy is beyond a dream for me.” While not much information has been given about the documentary, it is clear that Questlove intends to at least touch on the importance of Stone’s influential work, along with a glimpse into the difficulties he faced.
Questlove will be joined in this project by fellow hip-hop artist Common, who will serve as the executive producer of the film. You can follow Questlove to keep up to date on all of his latest projects.
