NON-COMM Recap: Deep Sea Diver shines under pressure
At their first show in over a year, Deep Sea Diver didn’t miss a beat. The band delivered a gripping five-song set live from Tractor Tavern in Seattle for night two of NON-COMM.
Opening with “Lights Out,” from their latest album, Impossible Weight,
Jessica Dodson’s fearless approach to songwriting was automatically evident. Her powerful voice ebbed and flowed over guitar flourishes as she proclaimed “lights out but my hearts still glowing.” Even in moments of self-doubt and deep contemplation like on “Wishing,” the band maintained complete control.
Smoldering as she shredded on “Eyes Are Red (Don’t Be Afraid),” Dodson was pure power. Flames seemed to leap up around her as the percussion picked up, and she insisted, “look at my eyеs turning red/burn this down together/I’m on firе.”
The intensity only increased with “Impossible Weight.” Tired of trying to meet other’s expectations, the song built up until it reached a breaking point. However, instead of collapsing under the pressure, much like diamonds, the song shined.
