Singer-songwriter and XPN fave Brandi Carlile returns this fall with her seventh studio album, In These Silent Days.

Out October 1st on Low Country Sound and Elektra Records, the album was recorded in Nashville with Dave Cobb and Shooter Jennings, and written with Carlile’s longtime collaborators Phil and Tim Hanseroth — all of whom contributed to Carlile’s Grammy-winning 2018 album By The Way, I Forgive You.

The project commenced on the heels of Carlile’s deep-dive into her life and memories for the Broken Horses memoir, and heading into the turbulent year of COVID. In a press release, she calls it a reflective set of songs, but a celebratory one as well. “This album is what drama mixed with joy sounds like,” Carlile says. “It’s resistance and gratitude, righteous anger and radical forgiveness.”

She elaborates on the unique circumstances surrounding the writing of In These Silent Days:

“Never before have the twins and I written an album during a time of such uncertainty and quiet solitude. I never imagined that I’d feel so exposed and weird as an artist without the armor of a costume, the thrill of an applause and the platform of the sacred stage. Despite all this, the songs flowed through—pure and unperformed, loud and proud, joyful and mournful. Written in my barn during a time of deep and personal reckoning.”

Along with the album announcement today comes the first single, a towering piano ballad called “Right On Time,” and its music video directed by Courteney Cox follows a very glam Carlile walking offstage and into a state of post-performance vulnerability as she ponders the loss of an estranged loved one — “either way I lose you in these silent days, it wasn’t right, but it was right on time.”
